I love learning about the human body, and how it works. I think AZCOM does an amazing job of helping us learn important concepts and integrate them across disciplines. With rotations only a few months away, I am confident that I will be prepared to contribute as a member of the health care team. Plus, my classmates are all out to help each other. Everyone is gunning to get ahead, but were all trying to take our classmates with us. We share study aides, notes from meetings with professors, and tutor each other. Least favorite? I spend time with my family every day, but I wish I had more time with my sweet wife and two beautiful children. Accepted: As a second year med student, can you share some advice to incoming med students? What are some things you wish you would have known before you began your medical studies? Otto: This is the hardest thing you will ever do, and thats a good thing. Before coming to medical school, I had stalled in my personal growth. The challenges of medical school have pushed me beyond my self-imposed limits and opened a world of possibility. Freeing yourself from the limits that tell you what you are capable of positions you to impact the world beyond the exam room. Todays healthcare environment yearns for leaders who can go far beyond what we have already tried in search of disruptive innovation. The end of each semester signifies the point in time where you should be able to integrate the concepts covered in class into an overall approach to problem solving (not a time to purge everything you crammed in). Medical students are critical thinkers, and doctors even more so (no, the patients dont read the textbook to know what their symptoms are supposed to be!). So many exams on our way to medical school (Im looking at you MCAT) were about understanding the mechanics and strategy of the test or professor. Now, exams are an important way to measure your progress toward saving lives. Everything you learn, even if it isnt directly related to your specialty of choice, prepares you to take decisive action to the benefit of your patients. Accepted: Can you talk about the connection between your interest in marketing and your passion for medicine? How do you see these two areas coming together in your future? Otto: Of course, every patient encounter leans on my marketing background since patient compliance holds equal importance to an effective treatment plan. I am an entrepreneur at heart. After graduating from the Marriott School of Management, I joined a technology startup company to gain first-hand experience with building a company from the ground up. Though I worked for the marketing department, I gained broad experience with and exposure to market research, product development, management strategy, and many other core components of a successful business. I collaborated with and spent time learning from our engineers, sales team, and senior management. As I grow in medicine, I am constantly evaluating processes, delivery models, tools, and other components of healthcare to determine how to use my experience to deliver disruptive approaches and technology to the industry. In my opinion, the time is right for the birth of a new approach to healthcare. In combination with my medical degree, I hope to leverage my professional experience to develop solutions that will define the healthcare environment for my children and grandchildren. Since World War II, people have been trying to abolish the death penalty. Today, ninety countries have abolished it for all offenses; eleven countries have abolished it except for special circumstances; and thirty-two others have not used it for at least ten years. Executions around the world are nearing record levels and the United States is one of the four countries who contribute to the record amount of 97% of the execution total. A report released by Amnesty International in 2005 shows that at least 3,797 people were executed in 24 countries in 2004. Are there some evils in existence that are necessary? In the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf, vengeance plays a central role in the actions of the characters. Beowulf is set in a Scandinavian society that places a heavy emphasis on righting wrongs and avenging others. A warrior who comes in aid of his fallen kinsmen is often regarded as a hero, and it is clear from the poem that combating those who have wronged you is a favorable action. Does this make vengeance a necessary element of heroism in the poem? This question cannot be answered adequately with a simple response of affirmation or dissent. By examining evidence in the text, one could make a reasonable claim for vengeance as a prerequisite for heroism, or just as strongly counter the assertion. It could be argued that Beowulf initially sought to aid the denizens of Heorot and seek vengeance on their behalf, but it is also stated that Beowulf and his men possessed a â€Å"stoutness of heart† that lead them there (338). The newly arrived son of Ecgtheow may have travelled to Heorot simply to test his own courage and strength. Each position has its own faults and convincing points, as well as information from the poem to solidify it. From the perspective of an argument in the affirmative, the motivations and actions of the monsters of Beowulf are perhaps the most compelling argumentative framework. Dresses had to be made and altered as well as securing the wedding decorations, caterer and wedding party members. The major constraint the wedding couple faced was the time constraint, trying to pull all of the elements together in order to create the perfect wedding would have been difficult at best. The critical path is very tight and there could be no room for mistakes, misunderstandings, or delays. The resources required for this project were mainly people and money. The more people helping to bring all the elements together, the quicker everything could get done. Since the Wedding is scheduled for the 21st of January, there is no need to reduce the notice period. If the project were started on January 1, the Mother getting the flu would not have impacted the guest list completion as it would have been completed by January 2. Since this is the first stage of the entire project, the suggestions would have been made that the mother, bride and all of the attendants get together the night of the 1st and make a complete list. Since most people in Australia do not use public transport and are reliant on their cars for transport, the country is among the highest polluter, per capita, in the world. Urban designs have a powerful impact on the quality of air, as well as exposing the population to pollutants. Integrated air-shed models, transport emissions, and land use that use advanced urban design software and spatial planning assisted researchers in the exploration of the effects that alternative transport, workplace, and residential structures could have on consumption of energy and urban air quality to 2011 (Gibson, 2011: p52). CSIRO examined six alternative future urban scenarios. The first was business as usual with extrapolation o f the current patterns to the future, which are dispersed, low density, and laissez faire. The second alternative was edge city with increased housing densities, population, and employment at elected nodes in the city, as well as increased investment that link edge cities via orbital freeways (Gibson, 2011: p55). The third alternative was corridor cities that focus on linear corridor growth that start from the CBD with support from upgraded public infrastructure. Fringe cities are the fourth alternative that involves additional growth that predominates on the city fringes. Finally, ultra cities involve additional growth that is predominant in provincial cities that lie within 100 km of the capital and are linked via high-speed trains. These urban configurations were applied by CSIRO to Melbourne City based on increased populations from 2.5 to 3.0 million by the year 2013 (Gibson, 2011: p56). Key assumptions in this included increment of residential density, a full uptake of controls of vehicle emissions, a varying ratio concerning private and public transport, and an increase in telecommuting, in specific industries.
